Review: Cilla - The Musical at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford
Published: 10:27, 17 January 2018
Honouring the legacy of the legendary Cilla Black is a pretty tall order, but one perfectly executed by Cilla - The Musical.
Kara Lily Hayworth saw off thousands nationwide for the coveted role and brings the life and legend of Cilla to the stage with great tenacity, confidence and charm.
The story of the loveable Liverpool girl's rise to fame is told heartwarmingly and vocals are delivered without fault across the cast.
Hayworth's take on the iconic entertainer is undeniably mesmerising and it's hard not to be blown away by her astounding vocals.
But the story wouldn't be complete without Cilla's beloved Bobby, excellently portrayed by Carl Au, who embodies the delightful charmer convincingly.
The highs and lows of Cilla and Bobby's relationship are beautifully encapsulated in the show - with every emotional twist felt by the audience.
Andrew Lancel gives a strong performance as the infamous Brian Epstein, who portrays with great presence Epstein's struggle at balancing his demons with his work.
The storyline's mix of songs and dialogue is just right and keeps the audience engaged with ease.
Of course, the story features the sixties's biggest group, The Beatles, as well as Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Mamas and the Papas.
The musical showcases hit after hit including best-selling songs Anyone Who Had a Heart, You're My World and Alfie, and sixties soundtrack favourites California Dreaming, Twist and Shout and Dancing in the Street.
For many who grew up in the 1960s, it evokes a sense of nostalgia and is a chance to relive the era.
The show is the musical adaptation of the ITV mini series by BAFTA award winner, Jeff Pope, on the early life of the singer and TV presenter, who died in 2015 aged 70 from a stroke.
The Bill Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield production includes one of the star’s sons, Robert Willis, as executive producer.
Cilla's legacy is honoured beautifully in the show and it's something you can tell she would have been proud of.
Cilla - The Musical will be at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford until Saturday, January 20.
