Easter premiere for Romeo and Juliet by the National Theatre with The Crown star Josh O'Connor

The National Theatre's production of Romeo and Juliet, which was filmed in December, will premiere at Easter.

The show, featuring Romeo, played by The Crown star Josh O’Connor, and Juliet, played by Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl, Judy), will be a new 90-minute version filmed over three weeks in the National Theatre’s Lyttelton theatre.

Olivier Award winner Adrian Lester (Life, Undercover) will play the Prince in the film, with Colin Tierney as Lord Montague, Ella Dacres as Peta and Tamsin Greig as Lady Capulet.

Directed by Simon Godwin, who also directed Twelfth Night and Antony and Cleopatra, Romeo & Juliet has been reconceived for the screen and adapted for the screen by Emily Burns.

Filming took place under the COVID-19 safe working filming guidance and code of practices.

It will premiere on Easter Sunday, April 4, at 9pm on Sky Arts, a free-to-air channel on Freeview channel 11.

It is presented by Sky Arts, PBS and No Guarantees, produced by the National Theatre, in association with Sabel Productions and Cuba Pictures.
