The show is based on the real-life story of a boy from a Sheffield council estate who believes he will be a superstar one day.

When Jamie is helped by a drag queen mentor and his supportive mother, he finds a way to step into the spotlight and reveal his fabulous new self.

John Partridge, best known for playing the role of Christian Clarke in EastEnders from 2008 to 2012 and appearing on reality shows such as Celebrity Masterchef, Celebrity Big Brother and Tumble, will star as Hugo - and Hugo’s drag alter-ego Loco Chanelle.

Famous faces including Steps singer Faye Tozer and RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage have starred in previous adaptations. Picture: Matt Crockett

The former soap actor is also known for his acclaimed roles in musical theatre, including Chicago, Cabaret and Cats, in which he played Rum Tum Tugger in the 1998 film production.

Shobna Gulati, who played Sunita Alahan in Coronation Street for more than a decade, will also be reprising the role of Ray, while fellow Corrie star Hayley Tamaddon will be playing the formidable Miss Hedge, Jamie’s teacher.

Taking on the title role of Jamie New will be Ivano Turco, while Rebecca McKinnis will play Jamie’s suffering but doting single mum, Margaret.

Between them, the pair have racked up an impressive number of West End shows, appearing in the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella, Dear Evan Hansen, We Will Rock You and Les Misérables.

Since its London debut in 2017, the feel-good show enjoyed a record-breaking three-year run in the West End and sold out theatres all over the country on its first nationwide tour.

After its phenomenal success, with stars such as Michelle Visage, Shane Ritchie, Bianca Del Rio, George Sampson and Faye Rozer all taking part in productions both on the West End and around the country, Amazon Studios then turned the musical into a film.

The on-screen adaptation features a stellar cast, including Max Harwood who originated the role of Jamie; Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire; Academy Award nominee Richard E Grant; current Strictly Come Dancing contestant Layton Williams; and Shobna Gulati, who is returning for the tour.
