Restaurants in Kent included in the Michelin Guide 2021 and Bib Gourmands

Four Kent restaurants have been awarded new accolades as part of the coveted Michelin Guide 2021, while six others retain theirs.
The Hide and Fox in Hythe added a new Michelin star to its list of awards, with the guide saying it is a 'stylish neighbourhood restaurant' and: "Cooking features the best ingredients from Kent’s larder in refined, delicate dishes."
It joins Stark from Broadstairs which first received its star last year, the Fordwich Arms near Canterbury, which first received one in 2018, and The Sportsman at Seasalter, which has retained its star since 2008.
Also receiving an accolade for the first time from the Guide is the Kentish Hare at Bidborough near Tunbridge Wells, which has a Bib Gourmand, awards which highlight restaurants that offer good quality, good value cooking.
Run by local chefs and brothers Chris and James Tanner, the Guide said the pub made "boldly flavoured dishes" and provided "smart dining," adding: "Care is taken both in sourcing and cooking."
The pair, former pupils of Mascalls School near Paddock Wood, have had the pub for seven years, and have picked up a string of awards along the way.
They join the Compasses Inn in Crundale, which has been included for the last two years, and Arya in Ramsgate, which was included for the first time last year, and the Swan Wine Kitchen in Tenterden, which sits above the shop in the Chapel Down vineyard and has held the award for several years.
Also receiving a new award is seafood bistro Angela's in Margate which has a Green Star, which itself is new this year.
It highlights restaurants at the forefront of sustainable practices, and working with sustainable producers and suppliers to avoid waste and reduce or even remove plastic and other non-recyclable materials from their supply chain, or working directly with growers, farmers and fishermen.
The Guide said of the "understated little bistro": "Their ethos is fiercely local and sustainable and even the tables are made of compressed recycled plastic. The concise blackboard menu lists sustainable fish and a vegetarian option – no meat – and cooking is pleasingly unfussy."
Also receiving a Green Star is The Small Holding at Kilndown.
The Guide said: "The focus here is on self-sufficiency, and they grow fruit and veg and raise chickens and rare breed pigs. Rustic British meets Nordic cooking on the tasting menus and dishes have bold, well-balanced flavours and lots of personality."
The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland recommends restaurants and pubs for the quality of their food and for those offering particularly good value.
