One of Kent’s most important historical homes, dating back to 1808, has gone on the market.

This former Napoleonic fortress in Rochester has been converted into a two-bedroom flat and is up for sale for £750k.

The Grade II listed Fort Clarence is the only fort of its kind left standing in the country and once served as a wartime gun tower and observation post.

The former English Heritage site was purchased by private developers in the 1990s and has been developed into four unique apartments, including the one now on the market.

However, it maintains many of the original features which make it such a unique home.

The 1,500 sq ft property has two bedrooms, including a principal bedroom with an en suite and doors leading out onto the terrace, and an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with a spiral staircase leading to the second floor.

The converted fortress is a short walk from the town centre and its many shops, bars and restaurants, as well as local landmarks such as Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral.

You can also reach Rochester’s train station and bridge, which takes you to the nearby town of Strood, within 15 minutes on foot, while the A2, M2 and M20 are all just a short drive from your front door.
