Make a pilgrimage to the historic city of Canterbury for the Medieval Pageant and Family Trail.

The pageant, which is now entering its seventh year, has been organised by Canterbury Business Improvement District and is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the city.

“We are delighted to be bringing the medieval pageant back to Canterbury for its seventh year,” says Canterbury BID CEO Lisa Carlson. “It creates a real buzz and positive energy and provides a great reason to spend the day exploring our beautiful city.”

With a focus on pilgrimage and the role it has in making Canterbury a bustling medieval city, the event will start with a colourful pilgrim parade through the Westgate Towers.

The parade, which features historical characters and re-enactment groups, will march through the streets and finish in the Buttermarket with a flourish of fanfares and traditional music.

Throughout the day, you can step into the shoes of a pilgrim and make your way to the 17 locations across Canterbury taking part in this year’s family trail.

Visit St Augustine’s Abbey, the restored medieval Franciscan Gardens, the Westgate Towers and Canterbury Christ Church University, where brave explorers can hunt down the dragon and save the day.

Each location will have its own fun activities for families to enjoy, and some will even reward pilgrims with a free chocolate treat.

As you stroll through the city, be sure to keep an eye out for the special medieval window displays created by pupils from local primary schools.

There will also be a number of things to do throughout the day, from outdoor theatre performances to sock puppet and pottery workshops, character hunts, live music and more.

The Medieval Pageant and Family Trail take place across Canterbury on Saturday, July 2 from 11am. Find out more online here.
