A shopping centre is relaunching its nature trail in partnership with the classic children's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The relaunch of Bluewater Shopping Centre's Nature Trail with Eric Carle's well-loved book also celebrated 50 years since the book was first published.

Amid the trail, young visitors to the centre near Dartford will now fund a giant wooden sculpture of The Very Hungry Caterpillar crafted by local sculptor Steven Porchmouth.

There’s also a new spider climbing frame in the heart of the trail.

Children can take the trail by picking up a free trail map in the centre and follow themed signs exploring the lakes, play areas, bug hotels, stepping logs and hopscotch.

First published by the World Publishing Company in 1969, the story features a caterpillar who munches his way through a range of foods before eventually emerging as a butterfly. The book has sold almost 50 million copies worldwide. It has also been made into a stage show.

The announcement from the shopping centre comes as its 50 acres of parkland have been recognised in the Green Flag awards.

Bluewater general manager Robert Goodman said: “We’re delighted to celebrate this new chapter of our popular Nature Trail through a partnership with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has entertained children for the past 50 years.

" I am sure the new sculpture will quickly become a favourite with kids and adults alike.”
