It's a show of girl power like no other, when thousands of women run and walk together to raise funds to battle cancer.

After lengthy lockdown delays, Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is back - and it's coming to a park near you in Kent.

The charity’s much-loved events will be back with socially distanced measures to keep participants safe. Money raised goes to scientists researching new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The Kent Race for Life events kick off in Maidstone's Mote Park with a Maidstone Bumper Weekend, on Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 22 when there will be 3k, 5k, 10k events; Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids.

There will be a 3k and 5k race at Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells on Sunday, September 5.

There will be a 3k, 5k and 10k at the Leas in Folkestone on Sunday, September 12; and the same at the seafront at Hampton Pier in Herne Bay on Sunday, September 26 and Palm Bay in Margate on Sunday, October 17.

The events are open to people of all ages and abilities, with races ranging from 3K to 5K and 10K while the Pretty Muddy event is over a mud-splattered obstacle course, and there is a version for children.

Every year around 52,100 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East and one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.

Lynn Daly of Cancer Research UK said: “Race for Life offers the perfect opportunity for people to run, walk or jog and raise money for life-saving research.

“All 400 mass participation Race for Life events across the UK were cancelled last year to protect the country’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic. So this year, more than ever, we need people to enter the Race for Life - for the people we love, for the people we’ve lost and for the one in two of us who will get cancer.”

This year, participants will set off on the Race for Life course either alone or in small, socially distanced groups. Hand sanitiser will also be provided to use before and after the event.

Lynn added: “We’ll ask participants to respect social distancing before, during and after the event.

“But we promise our events will remain colourful, emotional and uplifting. The safety of our Race for Life participants is our absolute priority."

If any of the events are cancelled, entrants will be entitled to a refund of their entry fee or can donate the fee to help fund the charity's work in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, progress in which has seen survival in the UK double in the last 40 years.
