In partnership with What’s On, Geoff Rambler has been leading a series of walks around Kent for the past year.

He will set out on his final stroll of the year this weekend – around the villages of Sandling and Boxley, near Maidstone.

The walk is open to any What’s On reader – all you have to do is meet at 10am on Saturday, November 2, in the car park of the currently closed Yew Tree pub in Grange Lane, Sandling.

Naughty Monks

The four-and-a-half mile walk, titled In the Footsteps of the Wyatts and Some Naughty Monks, will be a combination of woodland and countryside walking taking in Boxley Church and passing the ruins of Boxley Abbey.

Geoff said: “This short walk probably has more historical facts per mile than any of the other walk in this series. I will tell you about a memorial to a cat, the foolish man who wrote love letters to Anne Boleyn, the devious conduct of the monks and why their abbot ended up in the stocks!

“We will also find a connection between Boxley Abbey, Allington Castle, Cobham Hall and Hever Castle.”

The walk is a gentle ramble with no significant climbs. It is free but there will be a collection for the Kent Air Ambulance at the end.

The new book by Mr Rambler

Geoff Rambler, aka Geoff Ettridge, has put together his What’s On walks in a new book to raise funds for charity.

Rambles and Ramblings is a diary of 11 circular walks in Kent including Blue Bell Hill and St Mary Hoo, with a potted history along the way.

Many of them were rambles he organised during the past year in partnership with What’s On.

A minimum donation of £5 per copy is requested. All proceeds will go to support the work of the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance.
