Having trouble deciding where to go?
Here’s FOUR fantastic ski resorts to check out which are all within driving distance of Calais:
Avoriaz, France
Driving time from Calais: 8hrs and 40mins
A brilliant skiing resort for families, Avoriaz offers 650km of slopes to enjoy, some great accommodation options, and excellent snow cover between December and April. It’s perfect for the kids too. They can learn all the skills they need to tackle the slopes in ‘The Children’s Village’. Another feature is ‘Kid’s Parkway’ which has been designed specifically for children and absolute beginners. With the resort being pedestrianised and coupled with the incredible scenery, skiing, sledging or even just walking becomes a memorable experience. There are also guided horse-drawn sleigh rides available to explore the resort.
St. Moritz, Switzerland
Driving time from Calais: 10hrs and 55mins
Seeking the very best in luxury skiing? Then you can’t go wrong at St. Moritz. Described as the epitome of elegance and style when it comes skiing, St. Moritz sees around 300 days of sunshine each year while its lakeside location adds to its picturesque charm. With 350km of piste, 150km of walking trails, 58 lifts, and stunning scenery to enjoy, there are also a number of luxurious hotels to choose from, many of which are well-established. Quality restaurants and a great nightlife are also in ample supply.
St. Anton, Austria
Driving time from Calais: 9hrs and 55mins
With access to 340km of amazing scenery, perfectly preserved slopes and off-piste routes, St. Anton is renowned for being the perfect skiing resort for students because of its apres ski - meaning ‘after ski’ and a general phrase to describe the social activities that take place after a day spent hitting the slopes. Some of the bars there are well-known for keeping the beer and Jägermeister flowing into the night. There’s no shortage of other bars and clubs to visit around the resort, where you can enjoy dancing, live bands and DJs. Other activities include cinemas, ice skating, tobogganing and curling.
Meribel, France
Driving time from Calais: 8hrs and 55mins
Along with the neighbouring resorts of Courcheval, Val Thorens and La Tania, Meribel has access to around 600km of piste, making it a brilliant point from which to discover one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. With quaint wooden chalets and nestled in the beautiful Alpine valley of Les Allues, the area is ideal for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, with two gigantic snow parks offering slopes for all abilities. Non-skiers can head to the Olympic Centre (built for the 1992 Winter Olympics) too, and experience horse-sleigh tours, snowmobiling and snow hiking.
