Not everyone can remember 1977 these days, and even if they can, most of them are unlikely to remember a little-known single that hovered just outside the Top 40 and went by the name of Orgasm Addict.

No surprisingly it was banned by the BBC – although it would probably be used on a car commercial nowadays. The band behind the track were four lads from Bolton who’d already opened for the Sex Pistols and shared the bill with the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Clash. They went by the name of the Buzzcocks.

Twelve months later, they released their sixth single – yes, bands didn’t hang around in those days – Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) and cemented their place in the history of British music.

The title may have been nicked from a line in the musical Guys and Dolls and the lyrics scribbled together by singer Pete Shelley in a van outside a post office but the result was a classic love song overdosing on amphetamine-fueled punk.

Although it only reached No12 in the charts, this tale of unrequited teenage love was lauded a masterpiece. The track has been covered endlessly ever since but for anyone who can remember Kevin Keegan’s perm or queuing outside the ABC to see Star Wars, it is probably the song that reminds them most of being dumped for the first time.

Anyway, nearly 40 years on and the Buzzcocks are still going strong with Pete Shelley belting out Ever Fallen in Love and the band’s other classics.
