Australian comedian Tim Minchin will be performing a one-off show in Kent in just two weeks’ time.
The Olivier Award-winning artist behind Matilda the Musical has surprised Kent fans by announcing a last-minute performance of An Unfunny Evening with Tim Minchin and his Piano in Canterbury.
The show will include songs from the comic’s 2020 album Apart Together, as well as his much-loved musicals Groundhog Day and Matilda.
There will also be numbers from his TV and film work and early stand-up shows.
The evening will be a combination of musical performances and informal conversation.
Tim Minchin became a familiar face on the Australian comedy circuit in the mid-noughties, with his quirky musical performances making him a stand-out on the scene.
He became an international success with the release of his six studio albums, live DVDs and extensive tours, which have included dates across the UK and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
After building a successful career as a stand-up comedian, the British-born Aussie turned his hand to acting, starring as Pontius Pilate in Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar alongside Mel C and Chris Moyles.
He has also become a force to be reckoned with off-stage, having composed the music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel.
The musical opened in 2010 to critical acclaim, winning a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. The show also received 12 Tony nominations for its run on Broadway.
Last year, Matilda the Musical was turned into a feature film starring Alisha Weir, Stephen Graham, Sindhu Vee and Emma Thompson.
Just a few years later, the pianist teamed up again with the creative team behind Matilda, this time to write the music and lyrics for a stage adaptation of Groundhog Day.
The musical, based on the 1993 film starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, had an initial short run in London and New York from 2016 to 2017, and has recently reopened again at the Old Vic until August this year.
Tim Minchin will be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury on Wednesday, June 21.
