One of the country’s leading opera companies will be bringing its acclaimed productions to Kent.
Glyndebourne, based in East Sussex and host of the annual Glyndebourne Festival, is celebrating its residency at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury with two productions, a concert and a new chamber opera.
The company will be kicking off its five-night residency with two performances of Mozart’s classic comedy, the Marriage of Figaro, on Tuesday, November 8 and Friday, November 11.
The Marriage of Figaro, conducted by Stephanie Childress and directed by Michael Grandage, follows the story of a womanising aristocrat who, when caught out by his wife, is taught a lesson in loyalty.
The second production is Puccini's La bohème. The classic Bohemian love story, composed in the 1800s, takes place at the theatre on Wednesday, November 9 and Saturday, November 12.
This production, directed by Floris Visser, is Glyndebourne’s first new La bohème for more than 20 years.
Alongside the two operas, Glyndebourne will also be bringing an enchanting musical concert to Canterbury on Thursday, November 10.
The performance of Mozart’s Requiem will pair music by French composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges with that of his contemporary, Mozart, with incredible instrumental and vocal work from the Glyndebourne Chorus.
Completing the run of performances is Glass Human, a newly commissioned chamber opera by composer Samantha Fernando and librettist Melanie Wilson.
This opera, which will take place in the Marlowe Studio on Saturday, November 12, takes on the theme of loneliness and aims to introduce a new generation to the magic of the opera.
“Opera today can take many varied forms,” says Melanie. “This project is an example of that multiplicity in its use of electronics, contemporary vocal styles and a horizontal relationship between the instrumentalists and the singers on stage. We are excited to offer our audiences a fresh experience of what opera might feel like.”
The four unique Glyndebourne performances will take place at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from Tuesday, November 8 to Saturday, November 12. Book online here or call 01227 787787.
Tickets to some productions are already limited so early booking is advised. Ticket prices range from £10 to £79.
