One of Kent's best known contests - the World Custard Pie Championships - will be throwing down the gauntlet again this weekend.

After having to cancel last year's event due to the pandemic, this year the championships, which are more than 50 years old, are back and guaranteed to be as messy as ever.

To be held on Saturday, September 4 at Coxheath recreation ground next to the village hall near Maidstone, they will again see teams throwing pies made from a secret and closely-guarded recipe at each other - and aiming ideally for the full six point pie in the face.

The day, which starts from noon, will also see stalls and food on sale.

Originally the contest was started to raise funds for the village hall. In the following years, it has been on tele and attracted teams from across the globe.

This year's is under a new organising team after founder Mike Fitzgerald and other members retired.
