If you were a teenager in 1987, the name Rick Astley will bring back months of rewinding the tape player and listening again.
The singer was just 21 when his single Never Gonna Give You Up came out. It became the UK’s biggest selling single of the year and was No.1 in 16 countries.
His debut album Whenever You Need Somebody sold 15m copies worldwide and his first eight singles reached the UK Top 10, including Take Me To Your Heart and Hold Me In Your Arms.
But he wasn’t consigned to the record books.
Instead, he bounced back years later – he recently had his first No.1 album in 29 years, with 50, which has singles including Keep Singing and Angels On My Side – and he also had almost 1.8m views on VEVO and more than 600,000 streams on Spotify.
He’ll be singing hits from throughout those years when he headlines Bedgebury Pinetum tonight.
He said: “This year sees me celebrating 30 years in the music business since my first No.1 hit. I can’t wait to perform as a part of Forest Live.”
Tonight, he’ll be supported by singer-songwriter Rumer.
Her debut album, Seasons of my Soul, sold more than a million copies and she has been described as “heir to Dusty Springfield and Karen Carpenter”. Her latest album was released earlier this year, This Girl’s In Love: a Bacharach and David Songbook.

ELBOW SELL-OUT
Rock band Elbow will play their sell-out night at the pinetum on Saturday.
Since their debut album, 2001’s Asleep At The Back, the band, fronted by Guy Garvey, have become one of the most important bands in contemporary British music.
Releases include Cast of Thousands, Leaders Of The Free World, The Seldom Seen Kid, Build A Rocket Boys and 2014’s The Take Off And Landing Of Everything, that debuted at the top of the UK charts.
Their musical journey has included two Ivor Novellos and a BRIT award for Best British Band.
Renowned for the intimacy of their live shows, they released their seventh studio album, Little Fictions, in February. They will be supported by Steve Mason.
FOREST FUNDS
The Forest Live summer concert series has brought some big names to Bedgebury. Last year, Kaiser Chiefs and Sir Tom Jones headlined, and previous years have included Paloma Faith and Tom Odell.
They are organised by the Forestry Commission to bring forests to new audiences with funds raised going towards protecting, improving and expanding England’s forests and woodlands.
