Hear the legendary music of Bob Dylan in a whole new way with this award-winning musical.
Girl From the North Country, which is written and directed by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, is coming to the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury for five nights this August as part of its first ever UK and Ireland tour.
The show reimagines songs from acclaimed singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, and the soundtrack features numbers such as Forever Young, Like a Rolling Stone and, of course, Girl From the North Country.
“Collaborating with Bob Dylan has been a unique privilege for me,” says Conor. “We have had an amazing journey opening on Broadway and in the West End but I feel particularly excited and moved to finally bring this work to my home town of Dublin and on tour around the UK.”
Set in 1930s America, the musical follows a group of wayward strangers who meet at a run-down guesthouse and realise that their lives are all at a turning point. Together, they search for a future and uncover truths about the present on a journey of self-discovery.
The show debuted at London’s Old Vic Theatre in 2017 and moved to the Noël Coward Theatre in the West End later that year.
Less than a year after opening, the show won two Olivier Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the musical categories, as well as being nominated for Best New Musical, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best Actor.
The soundtrack has also received its own critical acclaim, with the Broadway recording having received a Grammy Award earlier this year for Best Musical Theatre Album.
For any Bob Dylan fans who might be wondering if the show gets the American singer’s seal of approval, the answer is a resounding yes.
“To be associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life,” says the Nobel Prize-winning artist. “It goes without saying the man is a genius for putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands.”
