There are many grand Latin names bestowed on flowers but this weekend, Great Comp Garden managers are going for a more run-of-the-mill name: Kevin.
The rare magnolia hybrid Kevin Hughes is one of only 18 and is being donated to the Borough Green site by the man it was named after, Kevin Hughes.
The spring flowering tree with deep pink perfumed flowers was raised by respected plantsman John Gallagher, who died last year and who also has a magnolia named after him.
Kevin said: “I was privileged to call this remarkable man my friend and it’s an honour that he named what was probably his best hybrid after me.”
He will plant it with Great Comp Garden’s curator William Dyson at the Spring Fling plant fair on Sunday, April 9.

His new tree planting at the site has a thriving collection of 80 magnolias, generally blooming in time for the Spring Fling, which will include plants from an array of independent nurseries in Kent, Sussex and Essex and is open from 11am to 5pm.
Great Comp Garden is open from now until Tuesday, October 31. For details go to greatcompgarden.co.uk
