Brexit or no Brexit - the riffs will keep coming from Belgian punk-rockers Chump, who are set to play Poco Loco in Chatham on Tuesday as part of a whistle-stop UK tour this month.
And while the band admit their pre-Brexit foray to UK shores is ideally timed to avoid any uncertainty if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal on March 29, guitarist Nicolas Fréson said whatever happened, the band would not be cutting ties with Britain.
“In fact the timing of this tour was fitting perfectly our personal agendas,” he explained to the Medway Messenger this week. “But, while planning the logistics of this tour, of course we had the “No Deal Brexit” in mind and we’re quite sure that the tour could have been a lot more complicated if we had decided to do it the first week of April.
“Anyway, we’re already planning to come back to the UK in the second half of 2020, Brexit or not, we’ll be prepared! Punk-rock always fits with politics and with troubled times.”
That punk rock spirit should mean Chump’s gigs are the ideal place to escape or transcend the depressing drudgery of Brexit and find a common bond with music fans - and the band will be looking to reach out for new fans around the UK.
The tour kicked off at The Trap in Bristol on Saturday before Chump moved on to the Mad March Weekender in Coventry the next day.
Tonight (Monday), sees them play Stoke-on-Trent before they take the stage at Poco Loco tomorrow (Tuesday). They then move on to dates at the Subside Bar in Birmingham on March 6, Gringos Mexican Tequila Bar in Norwich, on March 7, and then Crowley’s Bar in Hastings, where they finish on March 8 before heading home to Europe.
And if any new fans fancy escaping UK shores to follow Chump before March 29, plenty of European dates await throughout the coming year.
It’s an impressive itinerary for a band that emerged in the late 90s before disappearing in 2005, only to return more than a decade later, with their “fat wreck” skate punk sound seemingly as furious as ever.
Hailing from Liege, the band consists of guitarists Bruno and Niko, along with Romz on bass and Gilles on drums.
They’ll be supported tomorrow by Gravesend pop punk rockers The Half Strikes, renowned for “the most bangin’ Weezer cover in some weird ironic twist”.
They’ll also be joined by new Kent punk arrivals Heathens, a skate punk powerhouse with fast beats and gravelly vocals, bringing yet more quality punk rock to an already thriving Kent punk scene.
Entry is free. Starts 7.30pm.
