When it comes to the world of cinema, there are plenty of things to look forward to next year – Bridget Jones is back on the market, dinosaurs are stomping the earth and everyone’s two favourite witches will return to Oz.
If you can’t wait to get back to the cinema after the Christmas break, here are some of the most hotly-anticipated movies coming to the big screen in the next twelve months.
BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY: Fans of the unlucky-in-love Bridget Jones will be thrilled to see her, and her surprisingly large pants, back on the big screen. Sadly, she won’t be joined by her husband, Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth), who died four years ago and left her a single mum-of-two. Now, Bridget is looking to get back on the dating scene, despite feeling lost in a world of online romance and Tinder. Released on February 14.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD: In the first Captain America film where Anthony Mackie takes on the titular role, rather than former Avenger Chris Evans, we find the superhero in the midst of an international incident. Sam Wilson, armed with his shield, sets out to find the real mastermind behind the global plot before catastrophe is unleashed. Released on February 14.
ELIO: The latest tear-jerker from animation studio Pixar takes viewers on a sci-fi adventure into outer space. When alien-obsessed youngster Elio is mistaken as the Earth’s leader and beamed up into the Communiverse, he is forced to make friends with other-worldly beings in order to find his way home. Released on June 13.
FRANKENSTEIN: There’s some mystery shrouding the latest effort from Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, but that’s what makes it even more intriguing. What we do know is that the film, based on Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his monster. Release date to be confirmed, but expected to be the second half of the year.
JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH: A whole new cast of intrepid explorers try to find peace between humans and dinosaurs in the seventh instalment of this record-breaking franchise. It’s led by Scarlett Johansson as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, who is tasked with extracting genetic data from three of the world’s biggest dinosaurs. When Zora is stranded on an island with the prehistoric creatures, she learns a shocking secret. Released on July 2.
MICHAEL: Even 15 years after his death, Michael Jackson is still one of the world’s most controversial popstars. His sensational music career was pitted against, and often overshadowed by, a scandalous private life that made tabloid headlines for years. In this gripping biopic, the Thriller singer is played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson. Released on October 3.
SUPERMAN: In this latest depiction, Superman is plagued by an identity crisis that leaves him feeling torn between two worlds. The superhero, played by David Corenswet, sets off on a journey to bring together his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing as Clark Kent, all the while trying to keep dangerous villains at bay. Released on July 11.
28 YEARS LATER: Award-winning director Danny Boyle returns for the third film in his post-apocalyptic horror series. It’s been almost 30 years since the rage virus spread across the country, but a small group of survivors has managed to stay alive on a heavily defended island. When one of them decides to find out more about the mainland, he discovers the virus has mutated and become even more dangerous. It stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Cillian Murphy. Released on June 20.
WICKED: FOR GOOD: It’s been the talk of the town recently, with a viral press junket and TikTok presence that helped turn Wicked: Part 1 into a smash hit. The second part of the story, which is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz and is based on the musical by Stephen Schwartz, will see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo return as Glinda the Good and Elpheba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Released on November 21.
ZOOTROPOLIS 2: It’s been eight years since Disney introduced us to the world of Zootropolis (or Zootopia, as it’s known in some countries). Judy Hopps, a rabbit who works in the city’s police department, is still protecting the streets with the help of her partner, Nick Wilde, a sly red fox who left a life of crime behind to become a police officer. In this animated sequel, the pair must go undercover to follow a mysterious reptile. Released on November 28.
