Fifty-two years ago this month Pete Townshend smashed his guitar on stage for the first time. He said it was an accident, but a week later bandmate Keith Moon obliterated his drum kit to demonstrate solidarity. And a rock legend was born.
Half a century later The Who, or at least singer Roger Daltrey, 72, and Townshend, 71, are still touring and coming to the UK in March.
But if you can’t wait that long, catch tribute act Who Are You at Sittingbourne’s Central Park on Friday, September 30.
The band features Sheppey singer Steven Hunt – formerly of Island Brit Rock band Blighty. At 45, Steven wasn’t even born when The Who got together in 1964.
He says: “The Who have always been my favourite. Forming a group in their honour just seemed the logical thing to do.”
Steven admits finding the right musicians for his project has not been easy.
He explained: “Playing Who songs the way I expect them to be performed is not something every musician is capable of. We all needed to be massive fans, know the music inside out and be able to play it the way it is supposed to be played.”
The quest took him two years before the line-up of Terry Fearn on bass, drummer Brian Whitby and Gary Harris on guitar.
At Central Park, Who Are You? will be supported by Swale band The Narratones and Kent author Ian Snowball will be at the gig signing copies of his book about Keith Moon. Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets priced £10 are available by calling 01795 475547.
Who Are You? will also be at The Britannia in Fort Hill, Margate on October 29.
