Sport England's exercise tips for students to stay fit and healthy in lockdown

Sponsored editorial

With lockdown putting everything on hold, you’ll be missing your mates. Luckily there are ways that you can stay connected, unwind, boost your mood and actually get in a bit of exercise too. That’s why Sport England wants you to join the movement, to make the most of your lockdown life and get a bit of an energy buzz.

Getting enough exercise to keep you mentally, emotionally and physically healthy doesn’t have to be dull either.

Nobody’s expecting you to turn into Usain Bolt, but there’s lots of fun ways you boost your energy and mood during lockdown.

Forget the pub crawl, do the front crawl: Turns out you don’t need water to perfect your swim technique and clock up some lengths. In a stroke of genius, Olympian Yuliya Efimova showed us how it’s done – you just need a kitchen worktop or table to set you up for a front crawl.

Check out her Insta to see how the professionals do it, or do a more leisurely version by doing a breast stroke while lying on the kitchen floor.

Instagram’s 5k challenge: It couldn’t be simpler; run 5k, tag five friends to do the same and donate a fiver to the NHS. If you’ve not quiet mastered the whole couch to 5k thing, break it into five 1k chunks over five days (that’s about two laps of a football field a day).

.

Ready, Steady, Cook: No Pot Noodles required for this one! Set yourself a healthy cooking challenge with a tasty twist – you’ve got to bust a move while mixing up your meal. Put on a high energy playlist and get chopping, whisking and stirring while competing with your mates to create the best meal out of the same basic ingredients.

Eating well and moving more will help you feel great and stay connected at the same time.

Volunteering: Set yourself up as a community volunteer and jog or cycle your way round the neighbourhood delivering prescriptions (over 18s only) and food parcels. You’ll clock-up the miles without even realising. You’ll get that feel good buzz from being part of something really worthwhile too.

Share your #StayInWorkOut videos online and join in the movement.
