Stilt walkers, origami workshops and the best of Japanese culture is coming to Kent this weekend to remember Medway’s very own samurai.

The 14th annual Will Adams Festival takes place in Gillingham Park on Saturday, September 13 and will celebrate the work of the explorer who was the first-ever Englishman to travel to Japan. He may have died in 1620 but Adams’ legacy is still very strong and this weekend festival goers will remember the Gillingham-born navigator.

Japanese stilt walkers will tower above the revellers and the sound of thundering taiko drums will fill the park. Running from 11am to 4.30pm, the festival will once again focus on the Tudor and maritime England that Adams would have known, and the Japanese traditions he would have encountered. Martial arts displays, reiki therapy and origami workshops will bring a taste of traditional Japan to Gillingham.

But there will also be a celebration of contemporary Japanese culture with Wii games and Manga comics to enjoy. Representing Adams’ English roots, there will be opportunities to get involved in Tudor games, paper making and much more.

Play on Words Theatre Company will also be telling the story of the great man.

After all the fun, be sure to get a bite to eat at one of the Japanese food stalls, or opt for traditional English snacks.

Medway council’s Howard Doe said: “The Will Adams Festival is now in its 14th year and it is really important that we continue to celebrate his life and legacy.

“This is a free family focused festival with a difference – come and experience Japanese culture and activities that Will Adams would have known from the Tudor period. There really will be something on offer for everyone.”
