It’s a spectacle that’s been going for more than 400 years and it’s guaranteed to raise a smile.
The Chilham Chase at Chilham Castle is now in its 401st year, after being started by the castle’s original owner, Sir Dudley Digges, and features runners in fancy dress jumping over horse hurdles, doing a sack race and more over a two-mile fun run.
This year’s event, on Saturday, July 1, will be surrounded by activities highlighting the joy castle owner Tessa Wheeler, who died recently, put into the community.
It will include activities organised by the local school, local produce stalls, classic cars on the front lawn and a dog show at the back, as well as birds of prey from the Hawking Centre.
Throughout the afternoon and evening, part of the castle’s grounds will transform into a music stage, with music from talented local musicians including jazz singer Sarah-Jane Hassell, the Maida Vales and the Chillbillies and there will be performances from the school.
Entry is £10, £5 for children and £25 for a family. Booking in advance is recommended for the popular event. For details go to chilhamchase.com
