Extra star quality will be provided by TV and radio presenter Penny Smith at the switch-on of Tenterden’s new Christmas lights.

The town hit the headlines in August for switching on its festive illuminations in August, when in fact just one set was being tested on a single tree in the High Street.

Penny faced local Chamber of Commerce spokesman Richard Harvey in a lighthearted debate about the issue on ITV’s Alan Titchmarsh Show and now the former GMTV presenter will be switching on the lights for real at Tenterden Town Hall at 4.30pm on Sunday, December 1.

It will follow a short service in St Mildred’s Church at 4pm and a torch and candle-lit procession.

“We’re thrilled that Penny has agreed to do the honours,” said Chamber of Commerce events manager Jonathan Medes. "The town has been magnificent in helping to raise more than £15,000 to produce a display which will be bigger and better than ever.”

Faversham

Foodies are sure to love this year’s lights switch-on ceremony in Market Place.

The first Night Food Market is taking place, featuring a huge selection of local food stalls and refreshments.

There will also be gifts for sale, face painting and live music. It will run from 4pm to 8pm on Saturday, November 30, with the lights switch-on at 5pm.

Margate

Turner Contemporary will be turning on its Christmas lights at the Make it Festive Late Night Live on Friday, November 29.

It runs from 6pm to 9pm and the Big Sing community choir will sing carols.

Sittingbourne

A Christmas fair will be held in the High Street in the run-up to the lights switch-on on Saturday, November 30.

The road will close to vehicles at 9am with the fair opening at 10.30am.

There will be a stage for live music throughout the day and street entertainers will be walking through the crowds.

Father Christmas will be on parade at 3pm, before the switch-on at 4pm.
