It’s time to paint the town – not just red, but any colour you feel like, as street art comes to the Weald as part of the Chelsea Fringe Festival.
Cranbrook Goes Nuts in May is the first time the town has been involved in the fringe. Supported by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the street festival runs on Sunday, May 28 and Bank Holiday Monday.
The street festival will be centred along the high street in Cranbrook and the museum, Union Mill and St Dunstan’s Church will all be open. There will be chainsaw carving with artist Tracey Johnson, morris dancing from Boughton Monchelsea Morris, basket weaving workshops and stalls, activities and talks.
It will all happen between 10am and 4pm both days. For more visit the Facebook page facebook.com/Cranbrookgoesnutsinmay
It might sound nuts but the spectacle coming from award-winning spraypaint artist Sarah Gillings – aka S.o.S – is part of a street festival celebrating the Chelsea Fringe.
The Brighton-based artist will be letting loose on a bespoke hoarding in Carriers Road behind St Dunstan’s church creating a 2 x 10m piece of floral-themed artwork which will be painted live over the two days of the festival.
“I’m interested in using my conceptual skills and ability to tune into changes in social trends in order to help change perceptions and create positive social change,” she said. “I’m very excited about the demonstration at Cranbrook as it’s bringing an artform which is not usually associated with a quaint countryside village and turning the idea of “graffiti” on its head, showing a new audience that street art can be fitting with its environment and a beautiful thing.”
For budding Banksys Sarah will be running spray can workshops, through her project UCanSpray which encourages all ages and abilities to have positive spraypainting experiences. Participants can pick up the cans and be guided through the process of creating their own piece of spray art on either a vinyl disk, canvas, a t-shirt or bring their own object along to paint.
The workshops will be on-site next to the live painting and all materials are provided. They cost £10 for half an hour and the cost is £10.
