Maidstone: World Custard Pie Championships will be held in Coxheath for the 51st year

More than 2,000 pies will be sacrificed in the name of fun this weekend as the World Custard Pie Championships come to Kent again.

The food fight, which is staged at the same location where it was first held, will see 32 teams battling it out, armed with custard pies to pelt each other with.

The event, which will be staged on Saturday, June 2, started 51 years ago in Coxheath, which is where it is still held today.

Teams of four will parade at 2.30pm in their costumes before competing begins, with knock out rounds until a grand final.

There will be a children's wet sponge competition beforehand, which aims to be a training ground for future pie-throwers.

Among the teams this year are jokers the Bacon Butty Brigade, whose members have a forfeit which has been set for them which will be carried out infront of the crowd shortly before proceedings take off.

The event will be at Coxheath Village Hall and recreation ground, which is one of the three local causes it will raise funds for, with battle commencing at 2.30pm.

Started in the 60s, the event was launched with the help of local children’s entertainer Mr Pastry. Its "custard" recipe - which has remained secret throughout - is a concoction of flour and water.
