An hour after take off and we’re there, in full-on holiday mode – minus the flip-flops.

There’s just something special about flying that makes it seem like more than just a weekend break.

Speedy luggage collection and straight to waiting – but not booked – taxi to take us to our base for the next three days, The Southgate Hotel.

Even the cabbie told us it was a good one, and he was right.

Four stars, modern, with spa, pool, sauna and stylish rooms. But its location is what really makes it great, slap bang at the heart of Exeter and close to all the attractions.

Part of the Mercure chain, its staff offer the customer-centric attention to detail that you would expect from an independent.

And once you drag yourself away from the comfort of its beds and sumptuous breakfast feast, there’s plenty to be getting on with.

If you do choose the Flybe option, getting around once you’re there won’t be a problem with the Stagecoach Family Explorer pass. There are regular buses from the city centre to beaches including Exmouth, but if you prefer to stay local and sand-free, you would struggle to be bored.

If shopping is your thing, you won’t be disappointed by the Princesshay shopping centre, where three of the big-hitting department stores, a selection of other high-street chains and some indy traders can be found.

And after all that retail therapy, a veritable foodie haven awaits, with one of the most recent additions being Jamie’s Italian.

It’s decked out with retro-cool comic book-style artwork and features all the usual dishes, including the World’s Best Olives – a bold statement fully backed by my superfan daughter.

A cocktail menu to die for, prices that won’t break the bank and the flavour combinations Mr Oliver is famous for, with Devon produce used where possible.

Whether you’re a history buff or not, Exeter’s Underground Passages are a must-do. They’re exactly what you’d expect them to be – cold, damp, dark and just a little bit scary.

After a serious wobble 20 seconds in, daughter completed the whole tour, learning how they dated from the 14th century and were used to bring clean drinking water from natural springs in fields lying outside the walled city. Proud mummy moment.

The next day, we hit the picturesque quayside to visit Clip ’n Climb. Set up in a converted industrial building, it has various climbing walls and challenges for children and big kids.

A great way to while away a couple of hours if you’re not blessed with the good weather that we were.

With reduced check-in times for domestic departures, you can enjoy until mid-afternoon in the city before returning to reality.

They say time flies when you’re having fun, and this weekend did just that.
