Review: Wheels and Fins Festival in Broadstairs with Feeder

It’s very rare for a festival to be able to combine sport and music so effortlessly, but that’s what Broadstairs’ Wheels and Fins festival offers punters.

Skate ramps, gourmet food, big names in indie music and dance as well as bikes and boards make for a killer combination.

Now in its sixth year, this festival is impeccably organised with some real thought gone into making it have something for everyone.

Saturday had a slow start, with the festival feeling quite empty for quite a few hours, but the music was definitely not slow.

Some of the bands taking to the stage were really fantastic, such as Tunbridge Wells’ own The Modern Strangers, who were effortlessly cool, combining indie rock with disco fun. I was seriously impressed with their set.

Another honourable mention goes to Hey Charlie, an all-girl band, who have some serious potential as an act, but need to work on making their songs sound more original - I heard the riffs and baselines from Stacey’s Mum, Heart Shaped Box and Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This within their set… but as I say - there is some serious potential there.

A real stand-out band was Frazer, who had the kind of energy and musicality other bands can only dream of.

At first I thought it was a tad odd, but Sub Focus took to the dance tent at 4pm, which actually turned out to be a fantastic choice.

He played all of the hits including Tidal Wave, which got one of the biggest reactions of the day, yet I’m still not sure how you’re meant to dance to drum and bass…

Headlining on Saturday was Feeder. Now, this band has been around for decades, with tracks such as Buck Rogers and Just A Day still being indie radio playlist staples and it’s easy to see why.

Grant and Taka, who are now in their 50s, bound around with the same energy they had in their 30s. The crowd knew every word and they really did look like they were still having the time of their life all these years on.

They’re also a band where everyone knew more songs than they realise, making for one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time.

They spoke to me for KMTV before their set. See my interview here:

Bring on Sunday, with a line-up curated by Margate residents The Libertines, which includes the fantastic Echo and the Bunnymen, Cabbage, and Reverend and the Makers.

Tickets are still available on the door for £30 and, at that price, it’s a complete steal.
