Warm up your vocal chords and get those creative juices flowing as Canterbury’s Festival on the Hill returns.
This week-long multi-arts festival is putting on a diverse programme of live entertainment, from singing workshops to saxophone concerts, to help keep the arts culture in Kent thriving.
The festival will welcome acts from across the county and beyond to entertain the local community, with a particular interest in opportunities for young creatives.
The programme includes a number of events where pupils from St Edmund’s School, where the festival takes place, will take centre stage.
It all starts on Wednesday, June 28 with a lunchtime concert by the St Edmund’s Chapel and Chamber Choirs, which will launch the festival.
Later that day there will be a show-stopping performance by BBC Young Musician finalist and Last Night of the Proms musician Jess Gillam.
The saxophonist will play classic works by Leonard Bernstein, CPE Bach, Meredith Monk, John Harle and Philip Glass, along with the eight-piece Jess Gillam Ensemble.
There will also be a masterclass with Jess for those who are keen to learn more about the brass instrument.
The tunes continue throughout the week, with swing music from the Ray Gelato Giants and St Edmund’s Big Band and a rockin’ Saturday night with the Counterfeit Stones.
The group pay tribute to the Rolling Stones in unique fashion, bringing their very own Spinal Tap-style mockumentary to the stage with comedy and charisma.
The band will perform huge hits such as Satisfaction and Paint It Black dressed in vintage clothes from the Stones’ golden days and playing pre-loved guitars from decades’ past.
During the concert, there will also be a tasty BBQ and fully licensed bar if you really want to make an evening of it.
For those who love getting crafty, the festival also boasts plenty of art exhibitions and workshops for visitors to enjoy.
The St Edmund’s Art and Design Exhibition is open for the duration of the festival, showcasing fine art, ceramics and photography pieces from the students.
There are also a number of workshops, including art, book binding and swing dancing sessions, for those visitors who like to get hands-on.
When it comes to workshops, one you certainly won’t want to miss is a singing masterclass with vocal coach Mark De-Lisser, who has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande and Beverly Knight.
The BAFTA-winning coach will be hosting two separate classes, one for students and one for adults.
If your kids always seem like they’ve got endless energy to burn, there will be an open tennis tournament, a football festival with the Chelsea Football Foundation and a free cricket match taking place on select dates throughout the festival.
The last night of the festival will include an Icons concert, where you can sing and dance along to songs by some of the best-loved legends in music.
The production, complete with a full orchestra, vocalists and dancers, will recreate hits from the likes of Elvis Presley, David Bowie, The Jacksons, Take That and more.
Finally, the festival will go out with a bang thanks to a spectacular fireworks finale.
The Festival on the Hill takes place at St Edmund’s School in Canterbury from Wednesday, June 28 to Tuesday, July 4.
