Families can expect a weekend of entertainment on land, at sea and in the air when the world’s oldest sea regatta returns to Whitstable this weekend.
The traditional celebrations start on Saturday, July 12 having been brought forward this year before the Oyster Festival.
Canterbury Lord Mayor Ann Taylor is expected to open the regatta at Tankerton Slopes, with a trumpet fanfare to kick off the activities.
The £15,000 event has been organised by the Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club and will include a fun fair, puppet and magic shows, the Almost Crufts Dog Show and Owls About Town.
This year will also see the return of the popular greasy pole competition and will be one of the last chances to see the Sea King helicopter perform a simulated rescue with the RNLI before it stands down.
On Sunday,July 13 Whitstable Yacht Club will organise a series of races, including the Wanderer National Championships.
Music throughout the weekend will be provided by the Whitstable Brass Band, The Swinging Sixties, Crooked Style and Full Circle, while aerial displays of up to 230mph will be provided by the RV8tors aircraft team.
Lion member Mike Shaw said: “The generosity of local people means everything to us.
“I want to thank all the local businesses for the support they have given towards staging this event.
“As the regatta costs us £15,000 to run we hope not only to cover our expenses, but to provide a couple of days filled with enjoyment for everyone, while raising funds for good causes.”
Full details of all events are available in a programme, which can be bought on the day for £1, with a chance to win £100.
