Foals commanded the stage in a powerful performance, surrounded by fans and forest.
The four-piece indie rockers Foals played Bedgebury Pinetum last night, as part of Forestry England’s Forest Live concert series.
For those who don't know, the band has five studio albums, nominated for Brit and Mercury awards and won Qs live band of the year in 2013.
It seemed to be a night of bands with homographs as the support acts were called Yak, Kiev. Both rocked out with easy listening indie-rock tunes and entertained fans as they milled around the concert grounds.
When Foals took to the stage lead vocalist and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, drummer and percussionist Jack Bevan, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Smith, and keyboardist Edwin Congreave strolled onto the stage with confidence... and the crowd went wild.
It was clear Foals’ music translates well across all age demographics. There was the usual late teen to mid 20’s gig crowd. But there were plenty of sound-protector-clad children bobbing to the music on their parents' shoulders.
Foals perfectly blended their old classics and newer hits. Firm fan favourites included My Number and the slower Spanish Sahara. As the band began the melodic track, the lights beamed softly out over the swaying audience.
This was perfectly complemented by the setting, the stage was filled with spiky-leafed Yuka plants, with the backing projection transitioning between pastel toned prints and extreme close ups of the musicians.
The tall conifer trees in the surrounding forest enclosed the venue and some were lit with dazzling green hues.
Foals whipped the crowd into a frenzy when they performed their hit Inhaler. Lead singer Yiannis yelled: "Who’s ready for a banger?" before launching into the distinctive guitar riff. He threw himself into the crowd, running across the front row and crowd surfing into the middle.
As the band progressed to their heavier songs the excitable crowd attempted to form a mosh pit.
But I’m pleased to report it was more enjoyable jostling than swinging fists and fearing for your life.
There were food stalls, bar and beer tents. However many people took advantage of the bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) policy.
The portable toilets, too, were surprisingly fresh and even had high-quality toilet roll.
To top it all off, as well as being a wild evening it was all for a good cause. Forest Live held every summer by Forestry England helps to look after the nation’s forests sustainably.
The weekend's concerts include Hacienda Classical tonight and Paul Weller on Sunday.
