Folkestone’s annual lit fest has something for everyone through to its last moments.
On Friday, November 27, author of Tulip Fever and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – which was made into a film starring Judi Dench and Bill Nighy – talks about her “un-putdownable” new novel, Something To Hide. She’ll be at QuDeborah Moggacharterhouse at 6pm.
A must for all Diary Of A Wimpy Kid fans, host Alastair Watson brings the books to life with a draw-along and a quiz. There’ll also be exclusive clips of author Jeff Kinney talking about the books and how he draws his characters. For ages eight and over, the event is at Quarterhouse at 11am.
For younger visitors, on Saturday, November 28, the Dino Show includes dinosaur impressions, rhyming and gross games like Guess Poo from Alastair Watson, author of best-selling series The Dinosaur That Pooped. For ages five and over, it all takes place at Quarterhouse at 2.30pm.
Lewis Carroll’s enduring Alice In Wonderland was published 150 years ago this year and novelist Vanessa Tait – the great-granddaughter of the original girl on whom Alice was based – and Stefania Ciocia, reader of modern literature at Canterbury Christ Church, will be discussing its continued appeal at Folkestone Library at 2.30pm.
Also on Saturday, November 28, comedian, writer and actor Robin Ince will be leading his audience through his Reality Tunnel.
Veteran broadcaster Terry Wogan was forced to cancel his scheduled appearance at Folkestone Book Week on Friday, November 27 due to a back problem
The host of Radio 4’s Sony award-winning Infinite Monkey Cage, Ince’s show looks at the limits of the human brain, the ingenuity of gorillas and why dolphins don’t speak English. He’ll be sharing his views at 8pm at Quarterhouse.
Former journalist Sean Smith doesn’t deal in gossip – he deals in facts. His meticulously researched novels about celebrities fly off the book shelves and his latest about Kim Kardashian is no exception.
From when she got her first birth-control pills, to her first marriage and meeting Kanye West, his book has it all.
Sean, who has also written books on JK Rowling, Justin Timberlake, Cheryl Cole, Tulisa, and Victoria Beckam, has been described as a fearless chronicler of celebrities and digs deep to find the person behind the image.
He will be talking about it and how he researches all his subjects at the Folkestone Book Festival on Sunday, November 29, at 3.30pm at the Quarterhouse.
Rounding off the literary line-up will be singer Tracey Thorn, half of the duo Everything But The Girl. The 53-year-old will be talking to Andy Miller about touring and the highs and lows involved in the emotional craft that is singing.
Her memoirs Bedsit Disco Queen, followed by Naked At The Albert Hall, take in everything from stage presence to George Eliot and Dusty Springfield, plus the X Factor. Catch this rare chance to get the inside perspective on the world as a singer at Quarterhouse on Sunday, November 29, at 6.30pm.
