It’s easy to lose track of time during the summer holidays - especially if you’re getting lost in one of Kent’s outdoor mazes.
From figuring out 10-acre labyrinths to splashing around in a water maze, we’ve got six marvellous outdoor mazes for you to explore.
Hever Castle, near Sevenoaks
This historic castle is home to not one, but two, fantastic mazes for you to enjoy this summer. Find your way through the 100-year-old Yew Maze, which was built in the Edwardian era by William Waldorf Astor and features 8ft hedges and a quarter of a mile of pathways. However, if the weather is just right, you might want to cool off in the Water Maze instead. This unique maze consists of a series of stepping stones and hidden water jets which soak visitors as they wade through - just don’t forget to bring a towel, as very few stay dry until the end!
The mazes at Hever Castle in Edenbridge, near Sevenoaks, are open daily, but final entry is 45 minutes before the grounds close. Book your tickets here.
Leeds Castle, near Maidstone
Battle your way through 2,400 yew trees to reach the centre of this tricky maze. Nestled in the Leeds Castle grounds, this puzzling adventure features complicated patterns to truly test its visitors. However, if you persevere and find your way to the centre, you can sneak back into civilisation through the underground grotto, past the mythical beasts that adorn the walls, and out into the castle grounds.
The maze at Leeds Castle, near Maidstone, is open daily. Book your tickets here.
Maize Maze, Dartford
Join the ‘jubeelee’ buzz as you work your way through this royal maze. To celebrate the Queen’s jubilee, this year’s maze is themed around the Queen Bee. Help Her Royal Honeyness Betty the Bee retrieve the missing jewels from her crown by carefully searching the maze. Use your map and game card to guide you and keep an eye out for those glistening jewels hidden throughout.
The maize maze at Stanhill Farm in Wilmington, near Dartford, is open daily from Saturday, July 23 until Saturday, September 10. Book your tickets here.
Maze Moon, Maidstone and Rainham
Two giant mazes are taking over acres of the Kent countryside this summer. The maize mazes and sunflower fields, run by Maze Moon, are between eight and 10 acres in size and have their own unique shape which can be seen from the air. The Rainham maze is called Moon Mission and features an astronaut and space-themed images while, at the Maidstone maze, you will find Super Woof and Friends, which features a superhero dog, complete with his own cape.
The Moon Mission maze is at Lower Rainham Road in Rainham and the Super Woof maze is at Old Chatham Road in Sandling, near Maidstone.
Both mazes are open daily throughout the school holidays from Saturday, July 23. Tickets to the mazes can be booked online here.
Quex Adventure Farm Park, Birchington-on-Sea
These family-friendly coastal mazes are returning for the summer with two brand new themes. For those who want a real challenge, journey through the mini labyrinth maze with its many twists and turns. If you’ve got a pirate fan in your group, you might prefer Pirate Pete’s Seven Seas adventure maze, where you can embark on a swashbuckling journey through three acres of hedges to find the buried treasure. Your ticket also includes entry to the rest of the adventure park with farmyard animals, a giant zip wire and bouncing pillows.
The mazes at Quex Adventure Farm Park in Birchington-on-Sea are open daily until Wednesday, August 31. Book your tickets here.
The Marsh Maze, Romney Marsh
This outdoor adventure park is fun for the whole family, with two different mazes to keep everyone happy. The giant maze is perfect for older children who want to figure out the best path for themselves, while the mini wooden maze is a great activity for toddlers and smaller children. The marsh maze in Romney Marsh isn’t the only thing to do here; you can spend the day riding the pedal go-karts, tackling the 95ft inflatable assault course and playing a round of crazy golf.
