In the wake of his departure from Steeleye Span, fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner, and in the process has established their reputation as a groundbreaking force on the British folk scene.
Their self-penned material features a variety of musical colours from their palette, as well as an eclectic mix of material and comes to Canterbury this week.
2016 was a vintage year for the trio, with Peter receiving Best Musician in the inaugural folking.com awards as voted for by the concert-going public, with the advent of Gigspanner introducing a new audience to the musicianship of the violinist many consider in a league of his own.
British traditional music forms the bedrock of his repertoire with the trio, but with room to stretch the music in the moment. The late author Sir Terry Pratchett praised his gift for “spinning the world on his bow.”
Peter is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Sacha Trochet on percussion for the Gigspanner Big Band at the Gulbenkian in Canterbury on Saturday, November 23.
