This time last week I visited the Moto Medway on the M2 for Eat My Words and came away underwhelmed, to say the least.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I saw this morning that a building I described as depressing, grubby and grey has been named as one of the best service stations in the UK.
According to a user survey by independent transport user watchdog Transport Focus, the Medway services have been voted the fifth best service station in the country.
Speaking to more than 31,000 visitors at 119 motorway locations in the UK, the services were ranked according to the toilets, staff, value of the food and drink, electric vehicle charging and the impact that the visit had on drivers’ mood.
Moto Rugby on the M6 was awarded the top spot, with 100% of visitors saying they were satisfied with their visit.
Moto Donington Park on the M1 came in second place, Blackburn with Darwen on the M65 was voted third, Strensham Northbound on the M5 came in fourth and the Medway services finished in fifth place, out of 119 service stations.
The Medway services, which can be found between Gillingham and Sittingbourne, opened in 1963 and has outlets such as Burger King, Costa Coffee, Greggs, M&S and WHSmith to choose from.
There is also a small Travelodge nearby, a BP petrol station and three casinos.
Personally, I left the M2 services feeling rather uninspired and much preferred the Roadchef Maidstone on the M20 - but that’s just me.
