The last time I caught up with the Saturdays was back in 2008, when the girls were in Whitstable braving freezing temperatures to film the video for their single Issues.
Vanessa White remembers the shoot which included strolling along the seafront with different coloured umbrellas.
“It was a very cold day, but it was fine, you just deal with the cold. It was really fun!” said the 23-year-old.
Since those early days, the girls have gone from strength to strength, with three albums and 15 hit singles under their belts, including What About Us earlier this year, their first UK No.1, and their own TV series.
It is a level of success which Vanessa says they never thought would be possible.
“Did we imagine we would be this successful? Not in a million years. I don’t think we realise what we have achieved. I’m not sure what sets us apart. I think people can see that we get on well, it’s not an act. Maybe that appeals to everyone.”
The Saturdays’ personal lives have also changed dramatically, as Una and Rochelle have both recently become mums and Frankie is expecting her first child and about to go on maternity leave.
The Saturdays are Frankie Sandford, Mollie King, Una Healy, Vanessa White and Rochelle Humes
Vanessa said: “We are quite used to it now. Una and Rochelle worked until they were about to give birth. Rochelle is back now and we will be with Frankie for a little while and then when she feels like she can’t do any more she will go on her maternity leave. It works out all right. The mini Saturdays are all coming with us on tour, so we will need a bigger bus!”
Vanessa is the youngest of the group, and says she and Mollie King haven’t got any plans to become mums themselves just yet.
She said: “It’s not really made us broody. We love being aunties but that’s about it. I still definitely enjoy going out though it’s definitely calmed down a lot. Now I enjoy my nights in. The Saturdays are definitely maturing.”
But the group’s live shows are more wild and energetic than ever according to Vanessa, who promises that fans will be in for a treat when they perform at the newly created arena at Glow, built especially by Bluewater for the Summer Live! series of events.
“We like to put on a big show so if you want to come and party with us, get down to Bluewater.”
It will be familiar territory for Vanessa, who moved with her family from Somerset to Stratford, London, when she was five and used to regularly visit the complex.
She said: “I’m really looking forward to the show at Bluewater. I used to shop there all the time so I know it well. I love doing live shows, it’s so much fun and you get to see the fans. We are going to be doing all the old hits as well as the new ones.”
In addition to their work as a group, the girls have also been pursuing individual projects, Rochelle as a team captain on BBC3 panel show Sweat The Small Stuff, and Vanessa’s own recent duet The Zoo with Vince Kidd, a former contestant on BBC show The Voice.
She said: “We have known each other for years as we went to school together so he asked me if I would come on it, and I was like why not? It was a bit of fun.”
But she says that fans don’t need to worry that the Saturdays will be splitting up anytime soon.
“Maybe at some stage everyone will go off and do something else that they want to do, but I think we will always be a group.”
The Saturdays will be at Glow, Bluewater on Saturday, August 10. Gates open at 6pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets from £32.50. Call 0844 847 2479 or visit www.bluewater.co.uk
