Singer Jason Donovan is stepping back into the high heels of one of his best-loved roles.
The star is once again playing mad scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter in the current touring production of the Rocky Horror Show, a character he first embodied in 1998.
It’s been more than 25 years since the Australian actor first toured the country in Richard O’Brien’s riotous sci-fi musical, but he has remained a fan of the show ever since.
Not only did the role cement his place as a musical theatre favourite, but it’s also where Jason met Angela Malloch, a stage manager he later married. The couple have three children together.
“In a nutshell, I’m a fan,” says the former Neighbours star. “I love the show; I love the music; I love the character. I was touring my own show about five years ago and included Sweet Transvestite as a key moment in my musical career. It went down a storm.
“I can’t really remember much about 1998 but that’s another story. I don’t feel uncomfortable, though, playing him at 56 – and, of course, I have personal reasons for being grateful to the show.”
From 1986 to 1989, Jason found fame playing Scott Robinson in Aussie soap opera Neighbours.
His character is best remembered for marrying Charlene Mitchell, played by Kylie Minogue. The pair later released a single, Especially For You, which reached No. 1 in the UK.
He then enjoyed a successful pop career and appeared in the London Palladium version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
His latest role will see him join the cast of the Rocky Horror Show alongside comedian Nathan Caton as the Narrator.
“I always dreamed of fronting a rock band and this is about as close as I’ve got,” adds Jason. “When I put on those high heels, I become that rock ‘n’ roll star. It makes me feel powerful, tall, in charge.
“And audiences love it. As I look out from the stage, I see a beautiful landscape of people wearing outrageous costumes. It’s not hard to see why: in many ways, Rocky is panto for adults. The costumes are just as much a part of the show as the characters and the music.”
The musical follows a newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, as they take a trip to visit an old college professor.
When their car breaks down, they are forced to knock on the door of a nearby house and find themselves swept up in the seductive world of Dr Frank-N-Furter and his unusual band of followers.
The Rocky Horror Show made its debut at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1973 and was adapted into a feature film starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien in 1975.
It features musical hits such as the Time Warp, Dammit Janet and Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul).
The Rocky Horror Show will be at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley from Monday, August 19 to Saturday, August 24. You can book tickets online here.
