Carols, choirs and Christmas hits: Kent’s festive concerts in 2024

Ding dong, merrily on high! The bells are (almost) ringing out for Christmas Day, so it’s time to warm up those vocal chords and start belting out your festive favourites.

Whether you love to watch choirs perform classic carols or sing along to Christmas party tunes, we’ve got some fantastic festive concerts to get you in the yuletide spirit…

CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

Some of the cathedral’s biggest events of the year are the two carol services in the days leading up to Christmas. There will be music from the Cathedral Choir and readings that tell the nativity story. It’s all free, but queues are expected so get there early.

CORN EXCHANGE, Rochester

Watch a string quartet perform songs from your favourite Christmas films by candlelight. The festive edition of Fever’s Candlelight Concert includes numbers from Home Alone and Love Actually and beautiful renditions of well-known songs like Let It Snow and Jingle Bells.

Details: Thursday, December 19 and Sunday, December 22 at the Corn Exchange in Rochester from 7pm and 9pm. Tickets start from £27 and can be booked online here.

IGHTHAM MOTE, Sevenoaks

The singers from Tonbridge Rock Choir will be making the trip to the National Trust’s Ightham Mote for an outdoor concert. Crowds can expect uplifting songs, festive favourites and pop and rock covers.

GREAT HALL, Canterbury

The Kent Police Male Voice Choir will be performing a mix of classic carols and modern Christmas songs to get you in the mood for the season. The concert will be raising funds for the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

GULBENKIAN ARTS CENTRE, Canterbury

The University of Kent’s Big Band will return with another cracking Christmas concert. There will be swing songs, conducted by Ian Swatman, and seasonal classics performed by an electrifying live band.

KNOLE, Sevenoaks

For three Saturdays in December, local choirs will be entertaining visitors with carols in the Green Court. There will be music from D'Vine Singers, A Cappella and the Show of Hands Sign Language Choir, plus make sure you take time to admire Knole’s festive decorations.

MAIDSTONE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Warch three singing groups come together to perform a range of seasonal tunes and traditional carols. The Maidstone Wind Symphony, Maidstone Choral Union and Maidstone Voices will all be performing, and there will also be mulled wine and mince pies.

MICK JAGGER CENTRE, Dartford

Enjoy an evening of festive favourites and music from the stage and screen, courtesy of the Belvedere Concert Band. Their Magic of Christmas concert also includes classical music and guest vocals from Natasha Kissane.

QUEEN’S ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH, Broadstairs

After wowing the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, vocal group the Big Sing Choir will bring their modern versions of Christmas classics to Broadstairs. The singers will perform brand new arrangements to well-known numbers such as Oh Holy Night and Joy to the World.

ROCHESTER CATHEDRAL

Make sure you don’t miss one of the cathedral’s busiest events of the year. The annual carol concert, which has sold out in previous years, includes a performance from the Cathedral Choir and a chance to sing along to carols.

ST AUGUSTINE CHAPEL, Tonbridge

Lots of talented musicians from the local area will perform by candlelight for this concert, which returns for a second year. There will be performances from the Kent Police Band, West Kent Youth Voices, the Marsh Family and children from Bishop Chavasse CofE Primary School.

ST JAMES THE GREAT CHURCH, East Malling

The East Malling Singers are playing a selection of classical works and extravagant Christmas pieces at this year’s seasonal concert. Visitors can expect to hear Hanacpachap Cussicuinin, Carol of the Bells, En Natus Est, Sound the Trumpet and more, and there will be mince pies on offer too.

ST MARY THE VIRGIN CHURCH, Ashford

Ashford’s parish church will host an evening of music from Christmas films, as well as carols and chart hits, to celebrate the season. The band will be led by Wesley Carroll and the event will raise funds for the Kent and Medway Young Musicians Trust.

ST MARY’S AND ST EANSWYTHE’S CHURCH, Folkestone

This free Christmas concert has become a tradition in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter. There will once again be traditional festive carols, as well as toe-tapping live music, readings and entertainment performed by members of the local community.

ST MARY’S PARISH CENTRE, Dover

Touring band Oddfellows Brass is bringing 28 musicians to Dover for a festive concert. The Leicestershire-based group will perform Christmas classics, as well as their usual feel-good swing numbers, in a two-hour show.

TRINITY THEATRE, Tunbridge Wells

Step into the foyer of the Trinity Theatre to listen to various carols with a lyric sheet provided so you can sing along. If you play an instrument, you’re welcome to join in with the music – and don’t forget to pick up a mince pie and mulled wine before you go.
