A Kent garden has been named one of the best in the world to visit this spring.

The stunning Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Cranbrook has made Lonely Planet’s list of 10 must-visit gardens from its new book, the Joy of Exploring Gardens.

The book features 180 of the most spectacular gardens from across the globe, with locations in Costa Rica, Australia, Italy and Norway getting a mention.

In the top 10 list is Sissinghurst Castle Garden, a National Trust property that has attracted visitors since it opened to the public in 1938.

The garden was designed by poet Vita Sackville-West and her husband, author and diplomat Harold Nicolson, who lived on the estate in the 1930s.

The bespoke design combined Harold’s architectural background and Vita’s interest in romance and poetry, with the end product becoming one of the most celebrated gardens in England.

The garden has been under the care of the National Trust since the 1960s and features the Lime Walk, Nuttery and South Cottage.

At this time of year, tulips and daffodils can be spotted around the estate and 1,100 fruit trees will be in blossom.
