Watch out for a very large owl and the most awful Auntie in history heading to town with a brave little girl and her ghostly friend in the stage adaptation of Little Britain and Britain’s Got Talent star, David Walliams’ Awful Auntie.
The show comes to the Churchill Theatre, Bromley, from Thursday, May 24 to Sunday, May 27, before heading to Canterbury from Wednesday, May 30 to Sunday, June 3. It tells the story of Stella, who sets off to visit London with her parents, with no idea her life is in danger.
Waking up from a coma three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell Stella what has happened. But not everything Aunt Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie!
The show has been brought to theatres by the Birmingham Stage Company, who are also touring with David's Gangsta Granny.
It starts Gravesend-born Ashley Cousins, who went to Meopham School, and now lives in Hawley, near Dartford.
He first played a David Walliams character in Gangsta Granny, being selected at 18 to play the character of Ben, after playing Tall Boy in the hit show Billy Elliot the Musical. He takes to the stage in Awful Auntie as Soot the Ghost.
He said: “I love going on tour but I miss my family and friends and the quietness the countryside brings. I really love Jeskyns Park. Getting in to acting for me happened accidentally to be honest with you. I always liked school plays and was interested in how shows work.
“My uncle was an actor and my auntie worked in theatre. I remember seeing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a few years ago and wanting to be a part of it.”
Despite his years, Ashley was confident auditioning for the role. “I was in Gangsta Granny so I knew they were working on this play. It was lovely to read through with George (Georgina Leonidas who plays Stella Saxby). It was important to get the dynamics right.”
Of his character, he says: “Soot has an old head on young shoulders and is quite cheeky. He’s great fun to play.”
Of the characters he has to work with, is an owl, but Ashley’s not worried. “The owl is such a great character."
