From paper makers to sweet factory workers – they were all members of Maidstone’s past industries.
People who worked at one of the paper mills around the town or at the Sharps sweet factory and those who worked on the buses or were full time housewives all played their part in the life of the County Town in days gone by.
Those with a tale to tell, whether it is their own or one of an elderly relative, are invited to take part in a special Memories Day at Maidstone Museum on Friday, January 26.
Between 10.30am and 1pm, you can join others to reminisce and there will be a selection of objects and photos associated with local industries to look at.
Maidstone council’s Cllr David Pickett said: “Maidstone has a long tradition of manufacturing with some leading names in their fields based here. This will be a great opportunity for people to come together and share their memories and experiences of Maidstone’s fascinating past.”
Lyn Palmer, from the museum, added: “We’re really keen to welcome anyone with an interesting story to share about their working life, particularly in some of Maidstone’s bigger industries, including those who ran a household.
“We’d also like to record some of them for use in a future ‘oral history’ project at the museum.”
Entry is free. For more details go to maidstonemuseum.org. It is being run with the museum’s regular Café Culture group and the support of Golding Homes.
