It’s not every day one of the bands of a decade spring a surprise date on you.
Welsh rockers Stereophonics announced a one-off gig this weekend, with only a few days to snap up tickets - and they were duly snapped up.
Formed in 1992 and fronted by Kelly Jones, Stereophonics are known for a string of hits including Have a Nice Day, Just Looking, Mr Writer and Maybe Tomorrow.
They come to Margate Winter Gardens on Saturday, September 9 ahead of the release of their tenth album, Scream Above the Sounds, and their big BBC Radio 2 London Hyde Park show the following day.
The new 11-track record is written and produced by Kelly.
Describing Scream Above the Sounds as an “optimistic album”, Kelly said: “What’s good about the band is that we all still like each other. You talk about band’s fighting but we meet up every week and rehearse when we’re not touring.
“It started off as an international food night going for a Greek or an Indian. Trying different foods lasted three weeks and then we just went to the pub. It’s nice to still have a bunch of mates to go to work with and I think that’s one of the reasons why we’re so prolific.”
The band, which includes original members Kelly and bassist Richard Jones, are the eighth group to achieve five consecutive UK No.1 albums and they’ve also had 11 Top 10 singles.
They will be supported by fellow Welsh band Fireroad at the show on Saturday.
