During the summer holidays, the park is giving a different species a turn in the spotlight with a dedicated week of keeper talks, crafts, activities and feeding sessions and, from Monday, August 19 to Sunday, August 25 it’s Gorilla Week.

To celebrate, we’re not only giving away a family ticket but we’re also giving our winner a chance to meet these amazing creatures with a Gorilla Encounter.

You can learn more about Howletts’ family of gorillas and even get a chance to help the keeper feed them from the roof of their enclosure.

Howletts is home to the UK’s largest collection of western lowland gorillas. This critically endangered subspecies has seen its numbers decline by 60% in the past 20 years due to poaching and disease.

Gorilla Week is also a great opportunity to find out more about the Aspinall Foundation, Howletts’ partner charity that has worked to reintroduce more than 75 gorillas to the wild.

The charity’s rewilding projects have also seen at least 35 wild births to date, including the recent birth of two offspring from a gorilla that was born at Howletts.

Ima, a silverback gorilla born in Kent in 2002, was returned in Gabon in 2003 and, in July this year, he was spotted by the Aspinall Foundation’s monitoring team with two of his offspring.

This marks the first time in history that a zoo-born gorilla has successfully bred with wild gorillas and is a significant step forward for this type of rewilding project.

If you want to visit Howletts and meet the gorillas, you can take advantage of the park’s new summer ticket value bundle offer that gives visitors great savings on group tickets.

You can book tickets to visit Howletts online here.

The park is open daily from 9.30am to 6pm during the school holidays.
