Here are some top gardening tips for August...
1. Pruning Wisteria: Wisteria need regular pruning to keep the growth and size under control, but it will also improve the flowering display.
2. Pruning apples and pears: Summer pruning these fruits allows sunlight to ripen them and ensures good cropping the following year.
3. Deadheading plants: The process of removing flowers from plants that have faded or died. It is done to keep plants looking attractive and encourage more blooms.
4. Watering. An obvious task during hot and dry spells but it’s also important to know the needs of plants and use techniques to prevent water loss from both plants and soil.
5. Collecting and storing seeds: An opportunity to increase the number of plants in your garden for free by collecting and later planting seeds.
6. Harvesting vegetables: Gather all vegetables as they ripen. Crops such as peas, sweetcorn, beans and courgettes must be gathered regularly and frequently.
7. Cutting away old fruited raspberry canes: Different training techniques mean raspberries can be grown in gardens of any size and in containers.
8. Lift and potting up rooted strawberry runners: As strawberry plants put out new runners, it is better to move then into a greenhouse to protect them from the winter.
9. Pond care: Without care, ponds can become overwhelmed with overgrown plants, weeds and water that is unhealthy for fish and other wildlife.
10. Digging green manures into the ground: They return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure.
