There’s still just enough time to catch a unique exhibition celebrating one of England’s most renowned artists.
INKling, Ralph Steadman’s first UK exhibition in 10 years, opened at the Historic Dockyard Chatham in September and is almost at the end of its limited run.
Ralph’s daughter, Sadie Williams, curated the display which includes work from his collaboration with Gonzo journalist Hunter S Thompson and award-winning illustrations for George Orwell’s Animal Farm, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
Work from Ralph’s partnership with filmmaker and conservationist Ceri Levi, which boasts more than 300 original pieces, and a collection from his 1988 Picasso-inspired project are also on display, along with two original Picasso pieces.
The artist, who now lives in Loose, is at the centre of the exhibition as part of a recreation of his studio.
Sadie and her husband, who both have a background in theatre, made a replica desk covered in paint splatters with real paint pots that Sadie took from her dad’s studio and photos of Ralph with Hunter S Thompson and Johnny Depp. There’s also a cardboard cutout of Ralph and audio from the artist, recorded from his studio, played over the speakers.
INKling is at the Historic Dockyard Chatham until Sunday, November 17. The exhibition is included in a standard entry ticket to the dockyard.
