Pie is back on the menu in Kent this summer as the World Custard Pie Championships are held for the 49th year.

The event, which attracts teams from all over the world, will again be held in Coxheath near Maidstone - where they were founded - on Saturday, June 4.

Originally dreamed up as a way of raising funds for the village hall by Mike FitzGerald, the contest has gone from strength to strength, attracting teams from across the globe.

Teams of four take on opposing teams, throwing with their left hand, and points are awarded for hits on team members.

Last year's Japanese team, who flew in specially and filmed the event for Japanese television, are expected to return to defend their title.

Participants are encouraged to don fancy dress.

Fellow organiser Brian Mortimer, who was unable to be at last year's event due to illness, is back for this year.

It will be held at Coxheath Village Hall in Stockett Lane from noon.
