A festival celebrating the 1950s is returning after a successful debut last year.
The Kent ‘50s Festival brought crowds of rock ‘n’ roll fans to Sandwich last summer after announcing its first line-up of music artists, and organisers Killertone Records have decided to do it all again.
The festival, which takes place at the town’s Guildhall, will welcome visitors on Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12.
This year’s programme of live music will kick off on Friday with a performance and Q&A session with original 1950s singer Vince Eager.
The musician, who began his career in a skiffle band in Lincolnshire, will be performing music from the decade as well as discussing his friendship with Eddie Cochran, his West End shows and many TV appearances.
The evening will also feature music from Yann O’Fender, Little Dave and the Sun Sessions and DJ Little Carl who will be hosting the toe-tapping jive contest.
The following day boasts a line-up including the Sundown Boys, Rusti Steel and the Star Tones, The Metrotones and DJ Dave Mumbles, among others.
While these indoor concerts are ticketed, there will be free performances outside the venue at Guildhall Square from the likes of the Jive Guys, the Jukebox Sweethearts and DJ Terry Tiger.
It’s not all about the music; this year’s festival will also house a photography exhibition dedicated to American musician Eddie Cochran.
The Eddie Cochran Lost Locker Exhibition will display unseen photographs from the teen heartthrob’s personal collection.
Visitors can also browse vintage clothing and record stalls, take a look at the classic car show, grab a bite from the street food stands and stop off for a drink at the licensed bar.
Sonny West from Killertone Records said: “After the success of the 2022 festival, I am genuinely thrilled that we are returning with our second Kent ‘50s Festival. We have put together a brand-new line-up for 2023, bringing the music and culture of the ‘50s back to the beautiful town of Sandwich.
“We are truly excited that Vince Eager is able to join us for this year’s event. It's been a real pleasure to chat to Vince about his recollections of meeting Eddie. He will be talking about touring with Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Billy Fury and how he was part of the first generation of rockers. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity to hear stories directly from one of Eddie’s great friends!”
