One of the stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is set to appear in a villainous Disney musical.
River Medway, from Chatham, will be joining the cast of Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch as Ariel from December.
The musical parody, which tells the story of the Little Mermaid baddie Ursula from a whole new perspective, will be at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant in London for 10 weeks from December to February.
It will then hit the road on a UK tour with two Kent venues, the Orchard Theatre in Dartford and the Churchill Theatre in Bromley, listed among the dates.
However, with the Orchard Theatre still undergoing refurbishment there’s a chance the show could be hosted in Dartford’s new temporary theatre instead.
River Medway first rose to fame as a contestant on the third series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2021.
During her time on the show, the drag queen represented her home town on the runway by dressing up as Chatham’s Thomas Waghorn statue in front of judges RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and Matt Lucas.
The outfit included a tall orange and white wig to represent the traffic cone often placed on the statue’s head.
Since appearing on the show, River Medway has performed at a number of venues and events around the county, including Intra cabaret bar Poco Loco and this year’s Medway Pride.
Also joining the cast of the new comedy musical is Orange is the New Black actor Shawna Hamic, who plays the lead role of Ursula, and former member of boyband North and South Thomas Lowe as Triton.
The live show features an original soundtrack, puppets and a new script.
The tour is scheduled to stop in Dartford from Tuesday, March 19 to Saturday, March 23 2024 and in Bromley from Tuesday, June 18 to Saturday, June 22 2024.
