If you’re a fan of high-energy, toe-tapping musical theatre, then Sister Act is here to answer your prayers.
The feel-good show is back on the road after a sold-out run in London and it’s stopping off in Canterbury for five nights.
The touring production stars former Coronation Street actor Wendi Peters, best known for playing the larger-than-life Cilla Battersby-Brown.
Despite appearing on the cobbles for more than four years, the ex-soap star has performed in many theatre shows over her 30-year career including Oh What a Lovely War, Guys and Dolls and Rutherford and Son.
For her latest role, Wendi will be putting on a stern face as Mother Superior.
“The nice thing is that everyone who has played Mother Superior has been so different - not just physically but within their acting and characterisation,” says the 56-year-old actor. “I am going to play her American and quite stern but with a heart. And hopefully a little bit cheeky too!”
The show is based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith.
It follows Deloris, a disco diva who, after witnessing a murder, is hidden away under protective custody in a convent and starts a choir with her new sisters.
The musical features upbeat numbers by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken.
“I just know audiences will take away from this production a brilliant evening,” says Wendi. “Two hours of complete escapism where they will have fun, they will laugh, they may even cry towards the end and just enjoy themselves. I think it is so needed in the world at this moment - people need an escape.”
Sister Act will be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from Tuesday, July 23 to Saturday, July 27. You can book tickets online here.
