Dunkirk may be most famous as the backdrop for Operation Dynamo, the dramatic wartime evacuation depicted in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 blockbuster film, but the historic French resort has a host of other fascinating sights to explore.
Ferry operator DFDS is partnering with attractions and hotels to make it possible to see what the town has to offer without breaking the bank.
In the unspoiled sand dunes between Dunkirk and the Belgian border, the 19th century Museum Fort des Dunes depicts the history of the region from the middle-ages to the present day. The historically important site is also a nature reserve with picturesque views from its network of hiking routes.
The must-see Dunkirk 1940 Operation Dynamo Museum charts the incredible story of the ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’, when 100,000 thousand British and French troops were evacuated from the town as Hitler’s forces advanced. DFDS customers can enjoy two-for-one entry at both attractions.
Partner hotels include the Hotel du Beffroi in Gravelines, which is a charming, peaceful haven opposite the UNESCO World Heritage Belfry. Alternatively, the Ibis Dunkerque Centre and Le Welcome Hotel are conveniently located in the town centre.
Jacques Webb, Campaign Manager at DFDS, said “Dunkirk may be best-known for its role in World War Two, but this fantastic French town has much more to offer. We’re hoping to encourage British visitors to make the short hop across the channel and discover its superb historic, cultural, and natural sites, all at budget-friendly prices.”
DFDS offers up to 24 daily sailings from Dover to Dunkirk. Three-day short break fares start from £109 return for a car and four people. Save up to 50 per cent off high street prices in DFDS’ Duty-Free shop at Dunkirk, with £50 cashback included when booking a short-break crossing.
